Approach

I specialize in the Adlerian approach, which explores how past dynamics can co-create our present movement through life. My counselling approach draws on the Adlerian philosophy of gemeinschaftsgefühl (social connectedness or social interest) as the core, while creating an environment of collaboration, encouragement, and insight. I believe in a holistic, client-centred, and strengths-based approach, as well as being an advocate of social justice, to support diverse peoples through life’s challenges.

What is Adlerian therapy?

Adlerian therapy, developed by Alfred Adler, emphasizes on understanding the whole person within their social context (e.g. past experiences, family dynamics) to understand and reorient underlying beliefs and patterns, so that they live a more purposeful and socially connected life. It highlights each individual’s need for connection, belonging, and striving to overcome their feelings of inferiority (felt-minus to felt-plus).

Professional Experience

17 years ago, I started out with a background in education as a public school teacher at the primary level, working with students and their parents to support students’ education. Since then, I have had years of experience working and engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds and various stages of life as an educator, facilitator and support worker.

Since immigrating to Canada, I gained valuable experience as a support worker at an addictions recovery home, and provided behavioural intervention to neurodiverse clients diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), some with associated risky behaviours such as self-harm and aggression, using Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Naturalistic Developmental Behavioural Interventions (NDBI) and Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) play-based therapy modalities. Additionally, since September 2024, I have provided counselling, under supervision, with both neurotypical and neurodiverse clients diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), working on issues such as guilt and shame, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, trauma, grief and loss, and disorganisation.

Some of my specialised training includes:

  • Indigenous Canada by University of Alberta
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy Level 1 by The Gottman Institute
  • A Training Masterclass in Islamic Counselling, Therapy & Healing – Through the Holistic Model with Eclectic House (accredited by CPD – UK)
  • Adlerian Training Series (Psychopathology, Sleep-Wake Disorders, Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders, Personality Disorders, Depressive Disorders, Substance Use Disorders) with Dr. Marina Bluvshtein, Drs. Jennifer Williamson, Daniel Williamson and Rocky Garrison, Dr. Sara Saeedi and Pamela Oberoi, Dr. Len Sperry, Dr. Dinko Aleksandrov, and Dr. Jonathan Sperry
