About Anam Gill, Practicum Student Counsellor

Anam (she/her) is currently completing the clinical practicum for her Masters in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University under the clinical supervision of Amandeep Jassal, MSW, RSW. Anam’s therapeutic approach is rooted in empathy, collaboration and evidence-based techniques. She is dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment where individuals can openly express and explore their thoughts and feelings without judgement.

Anam has a keen interest in helping individuals overcome life challenges and cultivate emotional well-being through the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Anam supports individuals in identifying and overcoming self-limiting beliefs and behaviours that hinder optimal potential, ultimately to support individuals in living a fulfilling life.

Outside of the office, Anam enjoys doing yoga, attending spin classes, spending time outdoors and trying new activities

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the theory that cognitions (thoughts and visual images) influence our emotions and behaviour;  A cognitive-behavioral approach involves collaboration between client and therapist in identifying, evaluating and modifying unhelpful automatic thoughts which are obstacles to client goals. In addition, the exploration of solutions to obstacles (present and future) and practising behavioral skills learned in session are key aspects of CBT. Moreover, CBT emphasizes client values and aspirations, drawing positive conclusions from day-to-day activities and experiencing positive emotions in and outside of therapy.

Training/Background

Anam has experience supporting a counselling team as the intake worker in which she collaboratively completed intake with youth and adult clients seeking counselling, including preliminary assessment such as suicide risk assessment and safety planning. In working with diverse populations, Anam’s therapeutic approach entails the exploration of intersecting aspects of identity to gain an accurate understanding of client issues in facilitating healing and postive change. In addition, Anam has youth care experience in supervising and managing youth in an afterschool program, ages 4-10 years old, within a school setting. Moreover, Anam has experience as an intake coordinator for settlement services in which she worked closely with newcomers in Canada to initiate suitable referrals and community connections based on distinct needs of clients .
